Learning self-empathy and empathy for others - a poem
We should practice self-empathy,
Which is when we seek
To observe ourselves with kindness,
Through gentle judgment and soft critique.
Self-empathy is when our
Emotions feel out of place
We look inward and observe our thoughts
From a non-judgemental space.
When it comes to others flaws
We should be patient and kind
We have to work on self-empathy
When our own flaws are maligned.
We can’t try and understand others
If we don’t as well study our own selfish mind,
Like with all those we love,
With our self, we should be generous and kind
We need to practice self-empathy
With a gentle hand,
In the way when others have flaws
We should be quick to understand.
As we learn self-empathy
We cannot expend
As much energy on others or
Our empathy is pretend.
When there’s a lack of self-empathy
We feel incredible stress
That’s when you give understanding to others
And to our self give less.
Before we empathize with others we
Should first sit down at the table
And nourish ourselves and ensure
Our foundation is sound and stable.
Only then can self-empathy and empathy with others - become friends,
They can run in parallel,
If we hear feelings from others, we better
Find courage to share our own vulnerable feelings as well.
